Another opportunity to see Hodnet's Glow-worms

The weather may have put some people off joining last Friday’s glow-worm walk, but it did not deter the glow-worms. The highest number this year were spotted, fifty-nine in all. For a report, including video see here.
The Footpath Group’s guides are offering to repeat the session, next Friday evening – 29th June, in the hope of a slightly warmer evening which might entice more people to come. The walk will start around 10:30pm and last for about an hour. The meeting point is  the council yard (old auction yard) in Station Road, Hodnet.
If you’d like to come along, please send our Secretary an email giving your contact phone number so we can let you know at short notice if this event is re-scheduled (ie: in the case of bad weather – ideally weather conditions need to be warm and dry – we are unlikely to see anything if it is cold and wet!).
BE WARNED THAT THIS IS A WALK IN THE DARK OVER UNEVEN GROUND AND A TORCH, SENSIBLE CLOTHING AND STURDY FOOTWEAR ARE ESSENTIAL. BECAUSE OF THE NEED FOR DARKNESS AND THE TIME OF YEAR, THIS WILL BE A LATE NIGHT POSSIBLY ENDING AROUND 11.30 TO MIDNIGHT!
ANY CHILDREN MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY AN ADULT.
PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING ANY ESSENTIAL MEDICATION.
Hodnet Footpath Group can not accept any liability for loss of or damage to property [inc clothing and personal effects].

Large numbers of glow-worms sighted

Despite the poor weather over the previous 48 hours, those who went on the mid-summer day glow-worm walk, organised by the Hodnet Footpaths Group, had a rewarding evening.
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_6ntWvoxKQ&w=512] The six people who went along spotted the colony’s highest count of displaying females this year. Fifty-nine individuals in all were seen – not the all-time record, but certainly a sign of a good population.
For more information on glow-worms see the UK Glow-worm Survey website.
Anyone interested in joining a future glow-worm walk should contact the Footpaths Group’s secretary by email.
Update: A second walk the following Friday counted 65 displaying females, putting the first week’s count in the shade.

Hodnet Housing Development – Public Meeting

Hodnet Parish Council have organised a public meeting to discuss the proposed housing development to the east of Shrewsbury Street. The meeting will take place at the Lyon Hall on Friday 13th July. The meeting will be in two parts:

  • 6.00pm to 7.00pm: plans available for inspection
  • 7.00 to 9.00pm: questions, comments, etc.

It is anticipated that a good number of people will be present and in order to allow time for everyone to speak, 5 minute slots will be allocated. Those wishing to speak at the meeting should make themselves known to the Parish Clerk, Maryjayne Rees, on arrival at the hall but before 7.00pm.
Shropshire Council have been informed of the date of the meeting and have agreed to receive feedback from it after given deadline for comments on the plans.
The full details of the planning application are available on the County Council website here and with an earlier report on this website here.

Anyone for Glow-worm Spotting?

Did you know that Hodnet possesses one of the few Glow-worm colonies in this part of the country? Would you like to see them?
If so, Hodnet Footpath Group would like to invite you join us on a late-evening walk along the old railway track between Hodnet and Wollerton to see these elusive beasties.
This is arranged for Friday 22 June, meeting by the council yard (old auction yard) in Station Road, Hodnet for a 10.30pm start. If weather is poor, the reserve date is the following Friday.
If you’d like to come along, please send our Secretary an email giving your contact phone number so we can let you know at short notice if this event is re-scheduled (ie: in the case of bad weather – ideally weather conditions need to be warm and dry – we are unlikely to see anything if it is cold and wet!).

Hodnet Housing Development – Planning Application

Details of the planning application for the Hodnet Housing development are now available on Shropshire Council’s Online Planning Register here. The Application No. is 12/01818/FUL and members of the public have until July 4 to comment on the plans as part of the consultation over the development. (Comments should be addressed to the Planning Department at Shropshire Council.)
N.B. The Parish Council have now arranged a public meeting to discuss the planning application. This will be held on Friday, July 13th at the Lyon Hall. Please see here for details of the meeting.
The application has been made by Leverhulme Hesketh Trust and northshropshirechronicle.com quotes Neil Culkin for Strutt and Parker who organised the March consultation event as saying:

The people behind the plans are a consortium of three land owners, working as one.

The Application Form submitted to the Council lists the applicants as: Leverhulme Hesketh Trust, Charlton Developments Ltd., Charlton Developments (Self Administered) Pension Plan, Mrs MJ Clowes, Mrs SE Wood, Mrs JA Phillips, AEH Heber-Percy Esq.
The proposals are summarised as:

Mixed residential development comprising 50 dwellings (including affordable), creation of vehicular access (from Station Road) and estate roads; pedestrian/cyclists route; creation of public open space; conversion and extension of outbuildings to garaging for existing properties; to include some demolition of buildings | Abbotsway House Abbots Way Hodnet Market Drayton Shropshire TF9 3NQ

At present 35 documents are availble for download from Shropshire Council’s website these include the following:

  • Archaeological Evaluation
  • Archaeological Site Walk-Over/Building Record
  • Arboricultural Report
  • Flood Risk Assessment
  • Transport Statement
  • Existing & Proposed Site Plans
  • Main Drainage Proposals
  • Planning Statement
  • Statement Of Community Involvement
  • Floor Plans & Elevations for the various styles of houses
  • Key Plan
  • Location Plan
  • Existing & Proposed Plans/Elevations for 2 barns
  • Site Notice
  • Application Form
  • Article 11 Notice

Of particular interest to some local residents will be the result of the Community Consultation carried out earlier this year. Section 5 of the Planning Statement describes the process and list some of the comments received before describing the response to them.

Outcome
Taking on board the comments received, the final layout was amended to include a pond which local residents were particularly supportive of.
To address the concerns raised about road safety, we commissioned a highways consultant to comprehensively consider the affect of the proposals. This assessment confirms that the development will not create traffic congestion nor will it reduce highway safety. The proposed vehicular access presents the best and safest solution, being set at a suitable distance between the junction of Shrewsbury Street, the Fire Station and dwellings along Station Road. The highways design meets all Council standards and has been confirmed as acceptable by the Authority’s Highway Officer in the pre-application meetings held.
In terms of the affordable housing provision; the applicants intention is for such provision to be occupied by local residents and it is envisaged that the process of selection will be determined after the granting of planning permission in agreement with the Local Authority. It is also envisaged that a Management Agreement for the Public Open Space will be agreed at a later date.

Pictures of the earlier proposals are still available on this website in this post from our archives.

Changes at the Lyon Hall

The Lyon Hall has successfully applied to the local county council for a premises licence. This means that alcohol may now be sold between 10.00am and 12.00pm Monday – Saturday and Sundays 10.00 till 11.00pm, without the need to apply for a separate Temporary Events Notice. (TENs)
We hope that by making things easier for the hirers, the hall will become more attractive to potential users or groups who wish to hold a meeting or event where the sale of alcohol would add to the proceedings.
For users who wish to sell alcohol later than 12.00pm there is still the opportunity to apply (with the permission of the Lyon Hall committee) for a licence in their own right.  Please note that the building is limited to ten TENS licences per year and is strictly monitored.
To book the Hall or for further information please contact Mrs F Bennett on 01630 685213

Shropshire RCC Fuel Buying Scheme

Shropshire Rural Community Council (RCC) has launched a new scheme that will enable its members to take advantage of collective bulk buying power. Larger orders obviously secure better prices which are passed down to members of the scheme. A further gain can be had in the delivery costs in that every time a tanker comes out to a delivery it uses a lot of fuel – a full tanker can get as little as 8 miles per gallon, by grouping deliveries together ,so that one tanker delivers to several customers, the supplier saves money and that saving  with negotiation can be passed on to the customer.
CAN YOU HELP
The RCC needs local volunteers to act as a go between. Their role would be to tell the RCC each month how much oil people in their village want and also letting people know when the oil will arrive and at what cost. In return they will benefit from free membership to the scheme (normal domestic membership £20)
The RCC will negotiate the lowest price on our behalf.
To find out more about the scheme please contact Lizzy Thain on 01743 342167 or email or vist Shropshire RCC’s website.
