Hodnet Footpath Group Walk – Sun 4th October 2015

The Hodnet Footpath Group are organising a walk for this coming Sunday morning (4th October).
Meet at 9.45am at the Lyon Hall Car Park to travel to Cheswardine for a 4.5 mile walk (approx 2 hrs). We plan to follow a route detailed in one of the recently published series of walks around the Cheswardine area. Please bring suitable footwear and a drink. Children are welcome. Dogs too, provided they are on a lead.
We hope to continue with semi-regular walks over the autumn/winter months and familiarise people with the increasing number of local walks which are now available, as well as using routes within our own Parish. (For example, info about walks near Cheswardine can be accessed here, and walks near Stanton here.)
The date we have allocated for our next walk is Sunday 29th November, meeting at the same time and place. Route to be decided.
Hoping that some new faces will be able to come along.

Peplow Community Walk – Oct. 2015

A  circular afternoon walk around Peplow and High Hatton.
Refreshments provided afterwards.
Meeting at Elderberry Barn.(Mike and Dorrien’s).
Children welcome, also dogs on leads.
Please wear suitable footwear.

Flu Vaccinations 2015

Hodnet Medical Centre has recently published details of its Flu Vaccination Clinics for winter 2015. The relevant information can be found here on their website but is also reproduced below.

This year’s Flu clinics commence on Monday 5th October 2015.  Please ring the medical centre to make an appointment if you think you may be eligible for a free vaccination.
If you fall into one of the clinical risk groups who are advised to have the flu jab, or you

  • Are aged 65 and over (or will turn 65 by 31 March 2016)
  • Are pregnant
  • Have a certain medical condition such as diabetes or heart disease
  • Care for someone whose welfare may be at risk if you fall ill

we may be able to provide you with the vaccine.   If you are unsure whether you are eligible, please check with a member of staff, who will be able to answer your query.

Hodnet Medical Centre & Young People

Hodnet Medical Centre has added a page to its website announcing that young people aged 16 and over can now choose their own GP. It also details what this means in practice in regard to such matters as confidentiality and consent to medical treatment.

Maurice Chandler Centre hosts Wheels for All

Shropshire Council announced earlier this week that several centres across the county will be hosting the Wheels for All scheme. Run by Cycling Projects these sessions offer inclusive cycling opportunities for children and their families across Shropshire using adapted cycles including tricycles, hand cycles, quad cycles and other specially designed machines.
Locally, the Maurice Chandler Sports and Leisure Centre will be hosting two sessions during the autumn and winter. These will take place on Saturdays 17th Oct. & 14th Nov. between 11am – 1pm. The sessions welcome siblings and families to join in and enjoy the fun.

Superfast Broadband Available in Hodnet (South)

ConnectingShropshireConnecting Shropshire has announced that around 180 premises in and around the southern part of Hodnet village can now access faster broadband. This is the result of Cabinet 2 in the Hodnet exchange now being connected to fibre cable.
Connecting Shropshire advise that to connect to fibre broadband, residents will need to contact their chosen internet service provider to upgrade their broadband package – broadband speeds will not increase automatically.
They further recommend that people shop around to get the best deal for them by using a comparison website, such as www.cable.co.uk

Hodnet & District Garden Club October 2015

Hodnet & District Garden ClubAfter a very enjoyable talk from local wildlife artist and natural history writer Ben Waddams in September, the club next meets on Tues 20th Oct at 7.30 pm in the Lyon Hall, Hodnet for its AGM and members’ discussion group, followed by a gardening quiz.
October’s competition is “A display of autumn leaves”.
 
Light refreshments will be served and visitors are most welcome. Entry fee is £2 for guests, or annual membership only £12.
 

Hodnet and District Garden Club September 2015

Hodnet & District Garden ClubA reminder that after a summer of outings and visits, the Garden Club resumes its meetings in the Lyon Hall on the third Tuesday of the month for its autumn and winter programme. The next meeting is at 7.30 p.m.  on Tuesday Sept 15th when Ben Waddams will be talking about ‘Wildlife in Your Garden’. Ben is well known for his articles in our local papers on wild life. He illustrates these with his lovely drawings and paintings and has promised to bring some prints for sale. There will also be plants for sale. This month’s competition is for a crop of potatoes from one plant.
Visitors are very welcome to come along. Tea and biscuits will be served at the end of the meeting. Guest fee £2, or £12 to join for the whole year.

A Good Day for a Walk

Last Friday (11 Sep. 2015) proved a very good day for a walk! It was a rare warm sunny day in what has been a mostly cool and windy “summer”. Eleven people and one dog met by Wollerton Village Rooms for the walk which followed the route of Hodnet Walk Leaflet 5.
The walk, which was one of the monthly Peplow Community Walks, took the long way around Wollerton Wetlands, and then under the A53 and up to Helshaw Grange.

Wollerton gets Connected to Fibre Broadband

ConnectingShropshireConnecting Shropshire has announced that it has successfully installed fibre cable to Cabinet 1 in the Hodnet exchange. This cabinet serves around 70 premises in and around Wollerton and means that faster fibre broadband is now available to order in Wollerton.
Connecting Shropshire advise that to connect to fibre broadband, residents will need to contact their chosen internet service provider to upgrade their broadband package – broadband speeds will not increase automatically.
They further recommend that people shop around to get the best deal for them by using a comparison website, such as www.cable.co.uk
People in other areas should visit the Connecting Shropshire’s website to check which exchange area and cabinet serves their premises and to check the availability of fibre broadband.
In a separate announcement in its September Newsletter, it highlights that the administrators of the Connection Voucher scheme for businesses have said that the funding available for businesses is likely to run out in October. Therefore businesses which are considering applying for a connection voucher worth up to £3,000, should apply to Digital Birmingham without delay! Further information can be found on this page.
