Get Us Connected campaign launched

Shropshire Newsroom has here announced the launch of a new campaign to improve mobile phone reception across the county. The Get Us Connected campaign is a joint venture between Shropshire Council and the Shropshire Star. It is asking people to sign a petition in order to lobby the Government and network companies to improve the signal in the region. The petition will be delivered to local MPs and the Secretary for State for Culture, Media, and Sport.
Anyone who wishes to sign the petition can do so here. The petition reads:

To:
Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Sajid Javid, the UK phone companies and Ofcom.
We call on the Government and Ofcom to apply pressure on the phone companies to provide a better service. We demand action from the phone companies to act now to improve coverage in Shropshire.

WW1 Remembrance Service for Hodnet Soldier

King’s Shropshire Light InfantryHodnet Parish Council has been contacted by St Chad’s Church, Shrewsbury which is is holding weekly WW1 remembrance services. The services are being held every Wednesday at 5pm from 27 August 2014 until June 2019. The intention is to remember by name every man and woman listed on a Shropshire war memorial in the week of the 100th anniversary of their death.
On 8 October the lone name to be remembering is that of John Barber from Hodnet who served in the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. On November 5th a total of 23 people are to be remembered including William Hill from Hodnet who served in the Royal Navy.
All are welcome to any or all of these short (approx 1/2 hour) services. The names of those to be remembered each week are shown on St. Chad’s website: www.stchadschurchshrewsbury.com/ww1-services.
Those organising the services ask that if anyone would like to have another person remembered during one of the services, to contact them. They are happy to include men and women from any conflict with or without a connection to Shropshire. The information used to compile the lists for these services is also being used to produce a county roll of honour for WW1 and the information will in time be available on-line in a fully searchable format.
St. Chad’s can be contacted by phone 01743-365478 or by email.

The slides from his PowerPoint presentation are below and are on the whole self-explanatory, though a few notes are included below the slideshow where they are of help.
By the end of the meeting the assembled group had agreed that the process of revising the Parish Plan should go ahead, had had the opportunity to write down their comments on different aspects of it and to volunteer to participate further in the process.
Anyone wishing to know more, or to volunteer to be a member of the Focus Group, should contact the Parish Clerk on 01630-685745 or by email.

Free Electric Blanket Safety Tests 2014

Bed FireIn an article on their website Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service are advising everyone to check the safety of their electric blankets before switching them on as winter approaches. For those who would prefer the check to be done by an experienced person they are arranging free safety checks at three fire stations across the county. The closest to Hodnet is in Market Drayton on Wednesday Oct. 1st 2014.
It is important to note that whilst the safety checks are free they do need to be booked in advance. Appointments can be booked by phone from this Monday (22nd Sept.) by calling 01743 260200. SFRS is encouraging people to book as soon as possible in order avoid disappointment please as there are only limited places available.
Fire Safety Officer Alison Teece advises, “Your electric blanket may appear safe especially if it is not very old but damage to the blanket is not always visible and this can lead to it catching fire.” She also says that a quarter of electric blankets were condemned as a dangerous fire safety risk after they failed the same test last year.
If you know any senior citizens who may not be aware of the availability of these free safety checks and who use an electric blanket, please mention them to them and make sure they have the contact number – perhaps you might also offer to take the blanket to the fire station to be checked.
SFRS advise that those unable to bring their blankets to the fire station should carry out their own safety checks. They provide the following guidelines:

  • Check regularly for scorch marks or visual signs of damage.
  • Don’t fold but roll an electric blanket.
  • Never buy or use a second hand one.
  • Don’t use a hot water bottle with an electric blanket
  • Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Always ensure you have working smoke alarms on each level of your home and test them weekly.

Anyone who would like more information can call Alison Teece at the Community Fire Safety department at Shrewsbury Fire HQ’s on 01743 260258.

New Bowls Trophy Presented

Members of Wollerton Bowls & Social Club gathered on Saturday 13 September, 2014 to watch the presentation of a new trophy at the club’s green in Mill Road. The Reg Frost Memorial Trophy was presented by Nigel and Mark Frost in honour of their father who died earlier this year. The first winner of the trophy was Mrs. Lesley Jones.

Reg had been involved in Wollerton Club for over a decade and both he and Sylvia have been hard working members. Reg was often to be found at the club helping  out with maintenance work to both the grounds and the buildings. Before the start of this season he had been very involved in dismantling an old wooden shelter and replacing it with a larger metal extension to the existing one.
It was a great shock to all members of the club when Reg collapsed on the green on 2nd April during the first match of the season in the Market Drayton Seniors Bowling League. Reg had suffered a heart attack and died shortly afterwards. He is greatly missed by members of his family and members of the club.
The Reg Frost Memorial Trophy will now take pride of place amongst the club’s annual in-house competitions.
For more information about Wollerton Bowls & Social Club please see their web-page.
